When you’re wondering what dish to prepare for your family or guests, consider a mushroom pie. This is a very nutritious meal, with mushrooms providing the greatest benefits. Mashrooms are low in calories but high in fiber, which helps you feel full and can help you control your weight. Mushroom pie will provide your body with quality protein, which you’ll get from mushrooms, eggs, and cheese.

Moving on to the benefits of mushrooms, they are an excellent source of B vitamins (e.g. riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid), which help support energy metabolism and nervous system function. Moreover, they are good sources of antioxidants such as selenium and ergothioneine, which may help protect cells from damage, and the beta-glucans in mushrooms help boost the immune system.

Savory Mushroom Pie with Bacon – ingredients

A truly nutritious and universally delicious mushroom pie can be made by anyone. You will need:

For the base:

  • 200 g flour
  • 100 g cold butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 egg
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons cold water

For the filling:

  • 250 g mushrooms (e.g. champignons, porcini or other favorite mushrooms), sliced ​​
  • 100 g smoked bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 200 ml cream
  • 100 g grated hard cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

How to make the pie

Preparation of the base:

  1. Place the flour and salt in a large bowl. Then add the butter cubes and rub with your fingers until you get sand-like crumbs.
  2. Add the egg and cold water (a tablespoon each), mix until the dough starts to come together. Add more water if necessary.
  3. Form the dough into a ball, wrap in cling film and place in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Preparing the filling:

  1. Heat a frying pan with olive oil. After that add the chopped bacon and fry until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, fry the onions and garlic until soft. Then add the mushrooms and fry until golden brown and the excess liquid has evaporated. If necessary, boil the other mushrooms you are using beforehand.
  3. Add the cream, stir in the salt and pepper and return the bacon to the pan. Then simmer for a few more minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly. Let cool slightly.

Continue to prepare the pie:

  1. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll out into a circle slightly larger than your baking dish.
  2. Place the dough in a buttered baking dish, press down slightly on the edges and poke a few holes in the bottom with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes at 180°C to brown the pastry a little.
  3. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.
  4. Mix the eggs with the grated cheese and the mushroom filling. Pour this mixture into the baking tin with the prepared base.
  5. Bake at 180°C for about 30-35 minutes, until the surface of the pie is golden and the filling has thickened.
  6. The mushroom pie should be served warm, sprinkled with fresh parsley. The pie goes well with a green salad.
